The SAMARA

The SAMARA collaboration felt like a natural fit from the start, with our shared values and approach to craftsmanship. The Iron Snail’s motto, “Far Beyond The Grade”, perfectly captures the spirit of this collaboration. It speaks to the pursuit of excellence, pushing beyond the ordinary to create something exceptional - a philosophy that aligns with our commitment to quality and performance in every shoe.

The Leather

CHARLES F STEAD WAXY COMMANDER We selected leather from the famed tannery of Charles F Stead, known for producing the highest quality suede in the world and located just 61 kilometers from our workshop. The SAMARAs utilise Stead’s Waxy Commander. A leather with a shrunken fibre structure that is stuffed with a blend of waxes. This leather is highly water resistant and prevents stretching during the lasting process.

AMERCIAN WOOLEN COMPANY As a fun addition to the collaboration, we sourced wool from American Wool, to create a one-of-a-kind shoe. The red plaid fabric was shipped directly from the U.S., making this iteration a true cross-country collaboration. While at GORAL we are passionate about leather, wool offers a range of properties that are ideal for shoemaking. This particular wool is known for its resilience and long-lasting structure.

THE FOUR KEY STAGES OF SHOEMAKING CRAFTSMANSHIP

CLICKING

The clicking process is a crucial step in shoe manufacturing, where the individual leather pieces that make up the upper are cut into precise shapes before being assembled. This stage gets its name from the sound the machines make as they cut through the material.

CLOSING

The closing process in shoe manufacturing refers to the stage where the individual components of the shoe upper, such as the vamp, quarters, and tongue, are sewn or stitched together to form the complete upper structure of the shoe.

LASTING

The lasting process is a critical stage in shoe manufacturing, where the shoe's upper is molded into its final shape and attached to the sole. This process gives the shoe its structure, fit, and comfort, making it one of the most important steps in creating a well-constructed shoe.

FINALISING

The shoes undergo a thorough inspection and refinement before they are packaged and shipped to you. This process is critical for ensuring that each pair of shoes meets the highest standards of quality and craftsmanship.
